This week we learned about the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). As teaching candidates here in B.C., it is important that we understand provincial laws around copyright and the dissemination of student information. We must be careful when sharing any images, data, or personal information controlled by the school.
Since teachers usually create an abundance of content for lesson plans and assignment instructions, it is important that we fully understand the basics of copyright. While there have been updates to the Copyright Act and Fair Dealing in Canada (bill C-11) that allow teachers to use internet content for educational purposes, there can still be issues if certain copyright conditions are overlooked. Creative Commons gives content creators the ability to label their work with copyright conditions in a simple, yet efficient manner.
